Our borough has a proud history of supporting refugees and migrants. We are strengthened by our diversity and the values we hold, which enable and empower it.
We are working towards becoming a Borough of Sanctuary, welcoming those fleeing violence and persecution in their own countries and protecting the rights of all migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees. As a borough, we have a policy of resettling vulnerable refugee families from Syria and other areas of conflict. To date we have resettled 30 families, between 2019 and 2022 we plan to have welcome 100 families, bringing the total to 117. We are also committed to providing care to unaccompanied child asylum seekers and have signed up to the Safe Passage’s pledge to accept an additional 100 children over the next 10 years.
Our Borough of Culture year will be a celebration of our diversity. Our communities will narrate the untold history of post-war Lewisham, a striking new story of Lewisham’s past. We will embed an artist in our Sanctuary Borough team, using culture to change perception of refugees. Our programme of cultural activism will leave a lasting legacy, a creative footprint. We believe in the power of art and culture to change lives and so we will.
