Message from the Chair of the Holocaust Memorial Committee, Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham

Thank you for watching this special event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, as Lewisham comes together to remember the millions of lives that were lost during the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Every year Lewisham hosts an event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, and children from local primary and secondary schools who take part in our programme of Holocaust education show what they have learned through story-telling, poetry and performances. Obviously we cannot meet as we usually would this year, but I am delighted how everyone has come together to make this year’s remembrance special.

I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible, particularly Mark Curtis and Jason Webb from Small Nose Productions, and my fellow Holocaust Memorial Day Committee members; Reverend David Rome, Iman Shakeel Begg, Reverend Charles Pickstone, Joan Goldberg, Gerald Rose and Liane Segal.

The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘be the light in the darkness’. It is a call to all of us to identify different kinds of darkness – persecution, misinformation, denial of justice – and different ways of being the light and resisting that darkness.

We can’t let that darkness win. We must be the light in the darkness.
