Mercury Prize and MOBO-nominated musician Novelist is backing Lewisham’s Borough of Culture bid. Novelist was born and raised in Brockley and describes Lewisham as the ‘foundation of where I learnt to find myself.’
The 22-year-old believes that the community for young people in the borough is important, expressing how nice it is to grow up with people from your area and experience culture from a young age. Novelist describes having seen young artists go from performing at local youth clubs in the borough to starting their own creative careers here.
When he thinks of culture in the borough, Novelist thinks of Brockley, the murals, the bars and the way people ‘blend together.’ The mix of cultures in the borough is something he is extremely proud of.
‘The borough is very diverse, and the rest of the borough are proud of this diversity.
I attended a few schools in the borough and I‘ve experienced first-hand every sort of culture in those schools.’
Novelist believes that winning Borough of Culture would help us develop all the good things already happening in the borough.
‘It would be great to build on the foundation of culture we already have. Lewisham has a lot going on and a lot of young people say the same. Winning would amplify the good stuff we already have and allow other boroughs to look in on that.’
‘We already are the Borough of Culture, we may as well have the title.’
